Los Gatos Participates in 9/11 Day of Service

Effort launched in 2002 as a tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Los Gatos residents are joining thousands across the country who are participating today in the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance to commemorate the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA.

The effort was launched in 2002 as a living tribute to the deadly day and includes community service events for seniors, veterans, children, schools, homeless shelters, low-income residents and many others.

According to the serve.gov website, the event's national page, the observance is the culmination of efforts by the 9/11 nonprofit MyGoodDeed with support from the 9/11 community and leading national service organizations.

In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with helping to support the effort across the country.

The volunteermatch.org website lists many service opportunities in and around Los Gatos.

Volunteers are needed to paint and refurbish homes, run food drives, spruce up schools, reclaim neighborhoods and support and honor veterans, soldiers, military families and first responders.
