Los Gatos Youth Achieves Eagle Scout Rank

Ryan Hadley built work benches for Saratoga's Montalvo Arts Center artists' studios for his his Eagle project.

Los Gatos resident Ryan Hadley, 17, has earned the coveted Boy Scouts of America Eagle Award becoming Troop 539's fifth member to get the honor in 2012 and the 58th since 1923.

Ryan joined the troop three years ago from Massachusetts. He participated in a 70-mile hike at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico before moving to Los Gatos.

He plans to continue with the troop and earn one or two "Palms" before turning 18 next year and heading off to college, said Troop 539 committee chairwoman Sheryl McCoy.

To date, he has 35 merit badges. He received the award during a March 3 Court of Honor ceremony at the Los Gatos History Club, along with two other scouts.

Ryan enjoys ceramics, computer science, science and math. He's a member of the Los Gatos High School Rowing Team.

Scout leaders were impressed with Ryan's thoughtful attention to their  questions and his dedication to scouting, said McCoy.
