Updated: Los Gatos' Population Grows to 29,413

Monte Sereno's population, however, decreases by 142 residents, according to new census data.

Los Gatos' population has grown by 821 residents, from 28,592 to 29,413, or 2.9 percent, according to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The town's neighboring cities, such as Saratoga and Campbell, also saw increases in their populations. However, Los Gatos' closest community, one that the town shares police services with, , saw a decrease in its residents from April 1, 2000, to April 1, 2010, the numbers show.

  • Saratoga's residents grew from 29,843 to 29,926, an increase of 83 residents, or a .3 percent jump.
  • Campbell's residents grew from 38,138 to 39,349, an increase of 1,211 residents, or a 3.2 percent jump.
  • Monte Sereno's residents decreased from 3,483 to 3,341, a decrease of 142 residents, or 4.1 percent.

Town Manager Greg Larson said the figures weren't a surprise for Los Gatos. "It shows we haven't changed much over the last 10 years, which is what you would expect from a community focusing on quality, not growth," he said. "The slight changes in population are not surprising for Silicon Valley."

Larson was referring to Los Gatos' increases in its Hispanic and Asian populations and a slight decrease in its under-18 years of age population over the past decade. The Hispanic population has grown from 5.2 percent to 7.2 percent, a 2 percent gain; and the Asian population has grown from about 3.5 percent to 7 percent, a 3.5 percent increase.

In 2000, the under-18 population constituted 23 percent of the Los Gatos population. In 201o, the under 18-population constituted 21.5 percent, a 1.5 percent decrease in this age group. "We're still a very youth-oriented community," Larson said. "Over a fifth of the population is under the age of 18. One out of five residents is under the age of 18."

Los Gatos is also a pretty built-out community, with historic densities, he added. "We're not rapidly growing like has happened in South County and the Central Valley and parts of San Jose."

The data also showed that California's population grew from 33.9 million residents in 2000 to 37.3 million in 2010, and San Jose continues to be one of the five most populous cities in the state. It's ranked in third place, with 945,942 residents.

The other most populous cities in the state are:

  • Los Angeles: 3,792,621
  • San Diego: 1,307,402
  • San Francisco: 805,235
  • Fresno: 494,665.

Los Angeles' population grew by 2.6 percent. San Diego grew by 6.9 percent, San Jose grew by 5.7 percent, San Francisco grew by 3.7 percent, and Fresno grew by 15.7 percent, according to the data.

The largest county in the state is Los Angeles, with a population of 9,818,605. Its population grew by 3.1. The other counties in the top five include San Diego, with a population of 3,095,313, or a 10 percent increase; Orange, 3,010,232, or a 5.8 percent increase; Riverside, 2,189,641, or a 41.7 percent increase; and San Bernardino, 2,035,210, or a 19.1 percent increase, according to a press release issued by the bureau.
