PG&E paid its property taxes to counties in northern and central California last week. The total is an eye-popping $158 million.

Here in Santa Clara County the figure is $16.92 million.

The payments are the first of two installments. The next payments are due on April 10.

"Local governments must address public safety, environmental protection, education and other needs with limited financial resources," said Mark Caron, PG&E's vice president of tax. "PG&E's timely and substantial payments to local governments help them address those vital community services."

The company's tax payments to counties increased by more than $2 million over last year as property values climbed and PG&E invested in infrastructure.

PG&E serves about 15 million people in Northern and Central California.
