Man Accused of Beating Los Gatos Woman Faces Additional Assault Charges

Portola Valley suspect faces four felony counts of inflicting corporal injury on spouse, cohabitant, former spouse/cohabitant, attempting to dissuade a victim from prosecuting a crime and violation of a protective order.

A man involved in a violent domestic assault case in Los Gatos that took place earlier this year appeared briefly in court today to set a date for preliminary hearing to answer to felony spousal abuse charges and attempting to dissuade a victim.

According to the criminal complaint filed against John Trevor Maines, 40, he's accused of inflicting corporal injury on two victims, one taking place on March 7 and one between July 1 and Aug. 1 of 2012.

Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney James Demertzis said Tuesday's hearing in Department 46 of the San Jose Hall of Justice was to receive additional information about the case, which also accuses Maines of trying to prevent the victim in the March incident from being a witness to the alleged crime.

Also related to that incident, Maines is accused of violating a protective order, Demertzis said.

The March 7 altercation took place at the woman's home on Creekside Village Drive at about 2 a.m., when Los Gatos/Monte Sereno police responded to the incident and arrested Maines, booking him into Santa Clara County Jail for felony domestic violence.

Calls to Maines' attorney, Joshua Bentley, were not immediately returned by the time of this posting.

According to court records in San Mateo County Superior Court, Maines was convicted in September of 1986 of DUI as well as assault, battery and criminal threats, the latter of which was dismissed.

In 2008 and 2011, he was once again convicted of DUI after having been stopped for drunken driving by CHP and San Mateo County sheriff's deputies.

Maines' records also show he's been involved in two civil domestic violence cases in Santa Clara County Superior Court involving two women.
