Many people are familiar with what the federal, state and city governments do. However, few people know what America’s 3,000+ counties do. You will notice that my monthly newsletter will be a little different this year. Each month, I plan to spotlight a different aspect of the County. We are here to serve you, and my hope is that by highlighting what counties do, more people can connect with needed services and also discover some of the fun recreational opportunities we offer. What is your county government IQ? Take the quiz!
If the County quiz piqued your interest in County Government, consider applying for a spot in our annual citizen’s academy. The SCC GOV 101 Academy is a hands-on way to learn about Santa Clara County. The 10-week program provides a comprehensive overview of County government, its role and responsibilities, as well as the program and services offered by the County. The application deadline is January 15, 2014 and the Academy will hold its first session on February 11. Most sessions will occur on Tuesday evenings from 6:00–9:00pm. One half-day session will take place on a Saturday. A graduation ceremony will be held at the end of the academy during a Board of Supervisors meeting.www.sccgov.org
Another hands-on way to learn about Santa Clara County is to volunteer to serve on one of our 60 Boards and Commissions. These citizen groups serve a vital role in County government by gathering and analyzing public input and sometimes making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors. Please visit my website to view the current vacancies and how to apply.

Grab your walking shoes and join me on Saturday, February 1, at 10:00am at Martial Cottle Park for a walk around the newly-opened perimeter trail at Santa Clara County’s very first agricultural park. Martial Cottle Park is located on Snell Ave between Branham Lane and Chynoweth Avenue in the Blossom Valley neighborhood of South San Jose. In 2004 Mr. Walter Cottle Lester donated the 287-acre Martial Cottle Park property to the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department and the CA State Parks Department.
