Her motto is: “Always try my best!” She takes a calm, cool approach to her life and keeps a positive attitude when solving problems or trying new skills, mom said. She also looks for the creative answer when faced with a challenge. “Just be true to yourself.”

Kathy DeMerit, friend, neighbor and Kate’s former teacher, said it’s hard to believe that Kate is only in third grade. "She embraces life with eagerness and maturity."

“I don’t watch TV,” said Kate, “There’s too much good stuff to do instead.”

She swims, draws, reads, does gymnastics and likes being an individual, DeMerit said.

DeMerit added: "Kate didn’t let her Jan. 1 birth date stop her from having a pool party. Summer shone as Kate and her friends gathered at an indoor pool for some splash fun, complete with pool themed birthday cake."

Kate also entered which featured a homemade wig of snakes, (gummy worms) over her head as she crowned herself a modern-day Medusa.

“My mom inspires me; I learned to be helpful, honest, and kind,” she wrote.
