The Small Beauty of Los Gatos

Town Park Plaza sparkles day and night.

If the friendly, talkative and happy townspeople are not enough; if the gorgeous little shops, the all-around friendly nature, the relaxed atmosphere, the trusting and trustworthy air to the town and the great entertainment aren’t enough to please a visitor of Los Gatos, then I can only recommend one greater thing. As small as it may sound, it certainly caught my heart.

As we drove through the downtown one night, I caught a glimpse of the beautiful Town Park Plaza, on the corner of North Santa Cruz Avenue and Main Street. Strangely enough, I had never been through the area after dark, and the amazing scenery caused me to stop and stare, almost dumbfounded.

What a great idea to light up the square, not solely with street lamps, but with fairy lights. As we drove further down Main Street I noticed the sparkle in the trees and the twinkles lining the sides of the bridge. Simplicity is often something we overlook, such as a simple idea of throwing a few fairy lights here and there through the streets, but oh boy—it can be effective. So effective, in fact, I believe my little hometown in Tasmania could take a few pages out of the book of Los Gatos.

Soon after, we stopped by the plaza during the daytime. What struck me the most was how busy it was for being a week day. The water fountain was turned on and town children were playing in it, getting wet and cooling off from the warm summer temperatures. People sat on plaza benches reading or chatting with each other. It was so beautiful. It looked like a scene from a middle Americana town story book.

Not only are the charming little decorations at night and day an example of beauty that many other towns should take on board, but so are the many other fantastic attributes of Los Gatos—yet that’s what makes this unique little town so special and so beloved by all who pass through it.
