Man Can Be Dog's Best Friend

The love for our pets is most sublime.

According to the nonprofit Los Gatos Unleashed, there are about 9,000 dogs in 12,000 households in our quaint little town. It seems pretty fair to say that we love our pooches.

I was given a Collie X Border Collie about a year ago, and instantly I fell in love with him. Jack is his name. Jack and Jackie, that’s not too bad, is it?

He is the kind of dog that can brighten the face of the glummest with sheer, pure excitement in his eyes and the way he can’t wag his tail without making the rest of his body wag in unison.

The kind of love a pet receives is often most precious. The attachment that is created between an animal and its owner is often astounding; especially when we hear of profound stories of pets that have gone to extreme and intelligent measures to ensure the safety of their owner.

It’s not just about dogs, either. I had a gorgeous, black cat who was hit by a car in July of 2010 and I am still emotionally effected by it. Not to mention my three goldfish, one of which is nearly 2 years old, whom I do love dearly—which to some is an odd attachment. To others, it’s just the love one gains from the animals in their life.

Above all the love, affection, comfort, food-sharing and tail wagging, I think the most profound thing about an animal is the distinct personality that one pet can have.

My two dogs are completely opposite—one being boisterous, ditzy and reckless with a head full of air, and the other, Jack, who's 1 year old, is solemn, smart, sooky and affectionate. The contrast makes them both incredibly fun to play with and be around, which is the purpose to owning an animal. We feed them and house them, but most importantly we love them, and give them someone to love, too.
