The Yoga of Breath
This three-hour workshop with Richard Rosen will include both basic and intermediate pranayama practices. We’ll work with the two foundation breaths of modern pranayama, Conqueror (ujjayi) and Against the Grain (viloma), along with a few traditional breaths such as Channel Cleansing (nadi shodhana) and Bee (bhramari). There will be instruction in both proper reclining and sitting for breathing, and a "mini-workshop" in Corpse Pose (shavasana). We’ll also talk about the two traditional models of pranayama, the "classical model" of the Yoga Sutra, and the "kundalini model" of Hatha Yoga. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Richard Rosen began his study of yoga in 1980, and trained for several years in the early 1980s at the BKS Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. In 1987 co-founded with Rodney Yee the Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, California, where he still teaches today. Richard has written three books for Shambhala, The Yoga of Breath: A Step-by-Step Guide to Pranayama (2002), Pranayama: Beyond the Fundamentals (2006), and Original Yoga: Rediscovering Traditional Practices of Hatha Yoga (2012). He’s also recorded a 7-disc set of instructional CDs for Shambhala titled The Practice of Pranayama: An In-Depth Guide to the Yoga of Breath (2010). Richard lives in a cottage built in 1906 in beautiful Berkeley, California.
