When it’s hot enough to melt outside, refresh yourself with delicious ice cream.

Sunday, July 21 is National Ice Cream Day, and July is National Ice Cream Month, designated by Ronald Reagan in 1984.

To celebrate, here are places in Los Gatos where you can get a scoop. Some may even be giving it away free.
  • Dolce Spazio Dessert Cafe, 221 No. Santa Cruz Ave.: this spot has all sorts of yummy ice cream and gelato flavors. Perfect to cool off during the hot summertime.
  • Powell's Sweet Shoppe, 35 No. Santa Cruz Ave.: this downtown candy store offers the cool refreshing cream in an old-fashioned ice cream parlor that's a candy store, too.
  • Main Street Burgers, 20 So. Santa Cruz Ave.: you can have great hamburgers here, but this eatery's secret is its wide selection of Treat ice cream, a premium 16 percent milkfat concoction hand made in Santa Clara Valley since 1948. Cones or cups are topped with hot fudge, caramel, chocolate syrup, gummi bears, M&Ms and chocolate or rainbow sprinkles.
  • Bankin Robbins, 15730 Los Gatos Blvd. and 1444 Pollard Rd., With two locations in town the popular treat is pricey here, but worth it. Chances are you'll find the exact flavor you're looking for, including the popular mint chocolate chip and pralines 'n cream.

And if you're the type who likes to know the history of their holidays, here are a few fun facts about ice cream according to International Dairy Foods Association and the National Ice Cream Retailers Association.

  • It takes approximately 50 licks to finish off a scoop of ice cream.
  • It is estimated that 90 percent of the nation's population likes ice cream, making it almost a universal crowd pleasing treat.
  • The major ingredient in ice cream is air.
  • Although ice cream is thought to have been invented in China, the U.S. is the top ice cream consuming country.
