Unemployment Rate Keeps Dropping in Bay Area, State

The May jobless rate in California fell to 8.6 percent, down from 9 percent in April of 2013.

Unemployment rates continued to drop last month throughout the Bay Area and statewide, according to state employment numbers released Friday.

The May jobless rate in California fell to 8.6 percent, down from 9 percent in April and down significantly from a 10.7 percent unemployment rate in May 2012, according to the California Employment Development Department.

The unemployment rate also dipped in many Bay Area counties, with a drop from 5.4 to 5.2 percent in San Francisco from April to May.

The jobless rate in the city hovered around 6.5 percent at the beginning of the year.

Marin County held its spot as the California county with the lowest jobless rate in the state, decreasing from 4.6 to 4.5 percent unemployment.

Nationwide, the unemployment rate rose in May from 7.5 to 7.6 percent.
