Netflix 'en Español' is Here!

Los Gatos-based company launches today in Latin America.

The much-awaited day has arrived—Netflix has finally begun its launch in Latin America and the Caribbean, and, according to company insiders, it's about to expand to Spain and Britain next year.

but officially blogged about it Monday in a post written by Rochelle King, Netflix vice president of user experience and design.

King says the launch begins with Brazil and continues to more than 40 Latin American countries next week.

"By Sept. 12, people throughout the Americas will be able to instantly watch a broad selection of movies and TV shows streaming from Netflix on computers, game consoles like the WII and PS3, and Smart TVs," she wrote.

During the past few months, King said, the Netflix team has spent countless hours in the region learning as much as it can about how Latin Americans think about, and enjoy, movies and TV shows.

"We’ve licensed thousands and thousands of hours of feature films, classic favorites, gripping telenovelas, documentaries and kids shows we know you’ll enjoy," she said. "We’ve been testing and figuring out the right Internet architecture to make sure the quality and speed of the Netflix streaming experience is the best it can be."

Netflix, with a 25 million customer base, has streamed to U.S. members since 2007, adding the service in Canada last year. The expansion won't include the delivery of DVDs through mail, a service only provided in the United States.
