Qué Picante ... This Chipotle!

Chipotle Mexican Grill joins nine other eateries in town offering Mexican food in Los Gatos.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is coming to the former Hollywood Video location at the corner of Los Gatos Boulevard and Blossom Hill Road, making it at least the tenth Mexican-style eatery that we know of to set roots in Los Gatos.

According to a sign posted on the vacant lot's glass door, the restaurant has requested a license to sell alcohol on the premises.

The national burrito chain restaurant is within close distance to Una Mas, Baja Fresh and Taco Bell on Los Gatos Boulevard and High Tech Burrito on Blossom Hill Road. There's also Two Pesos Taqueria on Pollard Road.

Travel just about two miles to the center of town and you can dine at two Andales, Pedro's and the new fancy Palacio Restaurant.

Colorado-based Chipotle Mexican Grill spokesman Alex Pong said the store in Los Gatos is scheduled to open in early October 2012 and it will be around 3,000 square feet. "We appreciate the opportunity to serve this great area and share the Chipotle experience with the community there," Pong said.

Town folk seem thrilled with the offerings.

Jim Farr, sitting on a recent afternoon at the Starbuck's just down the street from the future site of Chipotle, said that having another Mexican choice is good for the local economy, and will be less expensive than other Mexican restaurants in town.

"I think that the idea that a business is opening in this economic climate is a good thing, no matter what the type of business it is," Farr said.

Nick Ramos, who comes from Hispanic descent, said he is glad to see all the options.

"Hey, it's not such a bad thing ... We could use more Mexican-style restaurants in this town," Ramos said. "Chipotle is good because the food is at a reasonable price and you get a good portion of food."

There is a Chipotle as the corner of Union and Camden...wow! Are they following the old Starbuck's rule of saturation? Not sure we need more fast food; the papers are loaded with articles about obesity, diabetes, etc...how about more home cooked meals?

My son says you can never have enough Mexican restaurants! He must be right because just in our family, there are three favorites which forces us to compromise every time we all go out. On weekends it is more about ambience than fast food.

I sure hope we didn't leave out any other Mexican restaurant in town. If you know of another, please let us know in the comments. Andale is leading in the poll. I've eaten there once and I loved it!

I agree the last thing any town needs is more fast food, but Chipotle, while a large chain, is pretty determined not to be lumped into those restaurants adding to America's obesity and sloth. They promote sustainable foods by supporting local smaller farms and preferring organically raised meats to those loaded with antibiotics. I'm a vegetarian, so this really doesn't affect me, but I felt this should be pointed out. Another plus for Chipotle is that every napkin in their restaurants is 100% recycled. I also prefer to make food at home and am healthier for doing so, but for those who do not, Chipotle is a far lesser evil than Taco Bell or KFC or many sit-down restaurants.

Can't WAIT! We like to have options when we need to grab a quick meal between scouting and sports- people don't cook at home EVERY night of the week- and it's usually for those types of reasons Stephanie, right? Some nights are just TOO busy- and I welcome a night OFF! :o)

Is Andale really Mexican? I thought is was more Southwestern ...

I think it's nice to have another reasonably priced restaurant in town. I love Mexican food! We try to cook at home most nights, but it's good to have options. I'm not sure I've ever been to a Chipotle, though my guess is they have some healthy options as well as my favorite--unfortunately--chips and salsa!
