What Was Your Favorite Song of 2012?

Share your thoughts and tell us which tune was your favorite for the year.

Every year, Bay Area-based DJ Earworm releases a mix of the top 25 hits of the year. His first breakout radio hit was “United State of Pop 2007.”

Known to some as Jordan Roseman, the mix master says the whole thing started as "tongue-in-cheek."

"I had no idea this was gonna go so far," he commented.

When asked about how he chose the name "Earworm" Roseman said it came from the German word "Ohrwurm" which is a song that gets stuck in your head.

"I wanted something super-catchy and jarring," Roseman said. "It was commonly used in German and was getting more popular in English around 2003-2004 when I was trying to find a name."

According to Roseman, it takes about a month of "focused work" to pull together each remix.

"I do start pondering it around November," he said.

As far as licensing rights go, Roseman says the music rights depend on the use.

"If it is just on Youtube and not for sale, then it is usually okay," he said. "Different venues require different levels of permissions. I usually post it on Youtube and see what happens. If I were to sell it, I would likely run into problems."

Roseman says he chooses his base song by looking at all the keys of each song and then seeing where instrumentals will fit.

Earworm's 2012 version is out now and already has nearly 3 million views on Youtube. Bay Area radio stations are playing the remix, called DJ Earworm Mashup-United State of Pop 2012 (Shine Brighter), and after listening a few times, Patch was wondering which song was the favorite in Los Gatos and the South Bay.
