5 Things You Need to Know Today, Oct. 28

Start your weekend by being inspired with a great afternoon movie at the Los Gatos Adult Recreation Center.

1. Good Samaritan Hospital offers a childbirth preparation class, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, 2425 Samaritan Drive, to help expectant couples understand and plan for the big event. Classes cover the physical and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy, how the mother's partner can assit in childbirth, relaxation and breathing techniques, what happens during labor and delivery (including cesarean section birth), and recovery. 2. The 's 55-Plus Program presents the movie Mao's Last Dancer at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at the Adult Recreation Center, 208 East Main St. Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy selects an 11-year-old peasant villager to study ballet in far-off Beijing, where he trains for seven grueling years to become one of China’s greatest dancers. His efforts win him the opportunity to dance in America, opening his eyes to a new love and the possibility of a dramatic defection from China in this remarkable true story. Details: 408-354-1514.

3. will be offering a scary good barbecue at its center, 4 New York Ave., 4-6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31. The goodies will include free burgers, Halloween games, Xbox death match, dance music and more. 4. Mark your calendar for the Los Gatos Community Foundation's seventh annual CATillion Gala 6-11 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at, 14595 Clearview Drive. This event has raised more than $200,000 in the past six years to provide funds for the nonprofit organization's grant and scholarships programs. Tickets are $150. The Sparkletones band will be performing.
