Los Gatos' Cats Estate's Original Five Parcels on Market For $6.8 Million

Other remaining four properties could be further split to help sell historic land.

The original "famous" Cats Estate, 17525 Santa Cruz Highway, which consists of 36.76 acres, five parcels, is now being sold separately from the other four parcels later added by the Los Gatos Ogilvie family.

According to listing agent Duane Adam, the price for the Cats Estate proper, including the three famous houses and the artwork, is $6,850,000.

The additional four parcels have not yet been individually priced, but can be included with the estate for $7,999,950. All nine parcels total 75.46 acres.

Adam said reports that the original five parcels are being split are incorrect. "That's how it was originally sold and that's what made it famous," Adam explained.

That means the original Cats Estate is being sold intact, he added.

The remaining land has not been priced yet because the owners are waiting for Santa Clara County to let them know about one of the buildings located there that has a problem with the roof, he said.

"We haven't decided whether we're going to tear it down or fix it," he said or the remaining four lots.

Originally all nine parcels were being offered together, he said. "We are splitting the property, but not the Cats Estate in its original configuration."

The property's deed is under the original owners' names, the late Diane and Bruce Ogilvie.

Those benefiting from the sale are their immediate children who are a part of a family trust, Adam explained.

Adam said he has prospective buyers with three interested parties. He also said he had met with a group called Friends of the Cats Estate, which had tried to raise funds to buy the property, but later disbanded.

Now, he added, some members of that group have joined another one with the same mission—to raise enough money to purchase the property preserve it as a public trust. He said members of the group include John Agg, executive director of The Museums of Los Gatos; and Sara Wood Smith, the great-great granddaughter of original owner and famed writer C.E.S. Wood.

Adam said a new Cats Estate video can help the public get a better picture of the beauty and magnitude of the property.
