Burton Craig, Walter Huff Are Monte Sereno's New Mayor, Vice Mayor

Monte Sereno City Council's goal-setting meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014.

The Monte Sereno City Council has selected Burton Craig and Walter Huff as its new mayor and vice mayor for 2014.

The selection was done during the Council's Dec. 3 meeting.

Craig said although the Council will have its official goal-setting meeting Saturday, Jan. 11, he'd like to focus this coming year on the tiny community's Housing Plan and how to best meet state mandates for affordable housing.

The 2014 housing plan will be incorporated into Monte Sereno's next General Plan, Craig explained.

"This will be our biggest challenge ... while maintaining the character of Monte Sereno," he said.

Craig would also like to continue to work on improving communications and building community to ensure government transparency.

This includes continuing the "Coffee with the Mayor" sessions, continuing improvement of Monte Sereno's website and holding another community picnic next year.

The latter event, held Oct. 5, was a great way to meet residents and talk about the small town, Craig added.

He would also like to identify the issues, needs and improvements Monte Sereno should undertake for the next 50 years.

Craig said he would also work on forming a group of Council members and citizens to contribute their ideas to this plan.

For his part, Huff said his top goal as vice mayor will be "Tea ... money that belongs to the city that the state is not giving" and start working on getting a new City Hall.
