Department working with local residents to compile list of privately owned security video footage to enhance crime prevention.

According to a post on the town's website, many residents have such surveillance cameras at their homes.

And increasingly, security cameras in front of homes and businesses have captured images that have proven critical in successful crime solving, the post said.

Local cops are asking residents who have surveillance camera systems, if possible, to install and direct such cameras to cover the public street and side area in front of their residence or business.

The department is requesting that residents notify the police department by registering their surveillance systems here.

In the event of a crime, investigators will contact the residents to ascertain footage if suspect information is captured on their cameras.

In consultation with alarm system professionals, the department recommends that a surveillance camera system have the memory capability adequate to store several days of images and have a minimum technical standard of 720p. However, lower resolution may still be helpful.
