More 'Icing on the Cake' For Los Gatos

Popular town bakery about to double its size by expanding next door to 68 W. Main St.

Hugely popular dessert heaven Icing on the Cake, 50 W. Main St., is expanding to the next-door location formerly occupied by The Indian Store, which closed in April after being in operation for four decades.

Huge signs outside the former Indian Store location announce the expansion. "Coming Soon. More Icing! OK, More Everything! Summer 2013," a sign reads.

We visited the bakery this weekend, and it was so packed with customers we couldn't even speak with the manager, but a store employee confirmed that owner Lynn Magnoli is taking advantage of the empty space to grow.

Magnoli opened the business in Los Gatos in September of 1985 and expanded from wholesale into a commercial kitchen. She moved into the West Main Street building in February of 2001.

Icing on the cake sells cakes, cupcakes, all-butter pound cakes, loaf cakes, cheesecakes, handmade pies, classic and specialty cookies, brownies and bars, breakfast treats and even wheat-free, flourless and vegan desserts.

By how crowded it was when we stopped by, its announcement on its website is a good warning for customers. "We're now in our peak graduation and wedding season, so we recommend pre-ordering dessert a minimum of one full week ahead ... two even better."

The business also announces that it's looking for experienced bakers, cake decorators and customer service staff.

Future neighbor Shoe Candy, 78 W Main St., is excited about the expansion. "I think the expansion will be complete in August," said a store employee, who didn't want to be identified.
