Santa Clara County launches drug prevention campaign, unveil Ecstasy documentary.

In an effort to discourage teens and young adults in Santa Clara County from taking the drug Ecstasy, officials have launched a countywide Ecstasy prevention initiative and unveiled a documentary film about the dangers of the drug. Officials said that the initiative is in response to a growing "epidemic" of Ecstasy drug use among the county's youth. A survey of 1,850 students in Santa Clara County found that as many as one in four teens have tried the drug at least once. "Many teens think it's just a feel good drug that removes their inhibitions," Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss said. Kniss is chair of the Board of Supervisors' Health and Hospital Committee. The Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors on Tuesday took a step toward fluoridating the county's water system. The board voted 7-0 to approve a new policy that supports fluoridation at the district's three water treatment plants and three district-owned water supply wells in Campbell. Supporters say community water fluoridation prevents cavities and saves money, both for families and the health care system. According to the Health Trust, a Campbell-based nonprofit organization that advocated for the policy, water fluoridation has been shown to decrease cavities in children up to 40 percent and is one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent childhood dental disease. Pragati Grover is honored for her service on multiple civic boards and commissions, including being a member of the City of Saratoga Planning Commission.
Saratoga resident Pragati Grover was recognized for her leadership skills in serving her community Tuesday afternoon during Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss' Asian-American Hero Awards luncheon. Grover was among 14 Asian American organizations and individuals recognized, along with Los Gatos resident Jim Sugai. "A true leader is someone who approaches the same problem from multiple angles and works in a variety of ways to improve their community. Pragati Grover is such a person," Kniss said during the event, which was held at the Fatima restaurant in Cupertino. Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss recognizes longtime town volunteer for his work.
Los Gatos resident Jim Sugai was among 14 Asian American organizations and individuals recognized Tuesday afternoon by Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss for their service to the community. Sugai, 92, was honored for his commitment in the arts through his years of work in several venues, including more than 25 years at Hakone Gardens, the local chapter of the California Native Plant Society in Palo Alto.
