Los Gatos Union School District trustees heard from District staff and parents about the costs and effects of moving Lexington students to Fisher.
After lengthy public comment and discussion about geological hazards, Los Gatos Union School District trustees voted Tuesday evening to relocate Lexington Elementary School students to R.J. Fisher Middle in the fall. Trustees, however, said they would revisit the matter at their May 15 meeting. LGUSD Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Leslie Paulides called the move an interim housing solution for the approximate 170 students that currently attend Lexington and who will move to Fisher Middle School at the start of the 2012-13 school year. Paulides, LGUSD consultants Melinda Lum from HMC Architects and Rick Kramer from Kramer Project Development provided cost options for the interim housing. Paulides asked trustees to provide …

Structural work has been completed and new buildings to be installed in February.
At a sparsely attended Los Gatos Union School District Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night, Leslie Paulides, assistant superintendent of facilities, gave an updated on the current status of Measure E bond funds. Los Gatos voters approved the $30 million bond measure in June of 2010 for the purpose of building a new Lexington Elementary School and addressing increasing enrollment with the improvement and building of new classrooms in the district. A portion of the Measure E Bond fund was dedicated to building several new classrooms at Louise Van Meter Elementary School. Paulides reported that the new Van Meter buildings are on schedule and that both the structural work and underground utilities have been completed. “Buildings are being …

Los Gatos Union School District officials are looking at ways of addressing student growth since campuses are near capacity.
In the past several weeks, parents all over the Los Gatos Union School District have been talking about the Lexington Elementary School construction project and the ramifications of decisions about this project on all schools in the district. Everyone I’ve talked to agrees that the Lexington community deserves a new, safe school—I heard one parent describe “Lex” as “the stepchild of the district, always being pushed to the back burner.” From what I can gather, she’s right: the other three elementary schools, Blossom Hill, Daves and Van Meter, and Raymond J. Fisher Middle School were all upgraded using funds from the 2001 Measure B bond. By the time the Measure B plan was wrapping up, $5.5 million had been set aside to remodel Lexington …

City Halls in several locations listed here will accept any mail-in ballot Tuesday until 8 p.m.
Think it's too late to vote in the May 3 special election because it's a mail-in ballot? Think again. There's a way to vote, just don't drop it in a postal box, says the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters. “If you mail it now, the postmark is not going to count,” said Elma Rosas, the public information officer for the Registrar of Voters. With four parcel tax proposals in Santa Clara County—Los Altos School District, Sunnyvale School District, Cupertino Union School District and Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District—Rosas is particularly concerned that many voters disenfranchise themselves by thinking a postmark will suffice. But hand-delivering the ballot to any of a dozen locations in the county will work up to 8 p.m. …

Two mountain schools are within the Alquist-Priolo fault and near liquefaction and landslide areas.
The majority of Los Gatos public schools are located within a quarter mile of a fault line, and at least two could be in serious trouble should a large earthquake occur, according to new data released by a watchdog journalism group. A 19-month investigation by California Watch unveiled Thursday uncovered holes in the state's enforcement of seismic safety regulations for public schools. California began regulating school architecture for seismic safety in 1933 with the Field Act, but data taken from the Division of the State Architect’s Office shows 20,000 school projects statewide never got final safety certifications. In the crunch to get schools built within the last few decades, state architects have been lax on enforcement, …
