Letter: A 7-Year-Old's Perspective on the Closing of Lexington School

After the Los Gatos Union School District Board of Trustees voted to close and  “relocate” Lexington Elementary School, my son’s dream of finishing his elementary school career with his closest friends vanished. After the board’s vote on April 10, his imaginary “famous” school in the whole world was destroyed and he now has so many questions, so many innocent queries. After he found out about board's decision, we had a talk. Here is what we talked about:   Me: What do you think about your school closing? Are you OK? Him: I don’t know, sad.  Me: Do you want to talk about it? Him: I don’t want my school to close. I don’t want to go to another school. I love my school. It is famous. Thank you for sharing this. Only the parents know how much this whole thing is truly affecting our children. No one is really thinking about what is best for the kids. We patiently waited for our turn, while every other school got theirs and, when the time came, it turns out that our money needs to be used for "better things". Shame on the Board.   more ›

What Should We Do About Lexington Elementary School?

Los Gatos Union School District officials are looking at ways of addressing student growth since campuses are near capacity.

In the past several weeks, parents all over the Los Gatos Union School District have been talking about the Lexington Elementary School construction project and the ramifications of decisions about this project on all schools in the district. Everyone I’ve talked to agrees that the Lexington community deserves a new, safe school—I heard one parent describe “Lex” as “the stepchild of the district, always being pushed to the back burner.” From what I can gather, she’s right: the other three elementary schools, Blossom Hill, Daves and Van Meter, and Raymond J. Fisher Middle School were all upgraded using funds from the 2001 Measure B bond. By the time the Measure B plan was wrapping up, $5.5 million had been set aside to remodel Lexington …

Did you think Tuesday night's meeting was fun? I was so tired Wednesday I could hardly stand it. I don't think anyone should be mad at you. I actually don't think there is as much division as it seems. Most people believe Lexington needs to be rebuilt AND that we need to address capacity issues in the district.
