Los Gatos Union School District trustees unanimously vote to stop funding campus reconstruction project after learning that the California Geological Survey wanted additional information for the site.
Before an emotionally charged room of 300 people at Fisher Middle School Tuesday night, the Los Gatos Union School District board of trustees voted unanimously to discontinue investments in the Lexington Elementary School reconstruction project. The decision was based off a letter sent by the California Geological Survey on March 27 that the agency would require more information regarding the proposed rebuild site before it could approve the project. “The unfortunate aspect of that is that we are not sure we can come back with a positive outcome,” said Mike Kleams, a geotechnical engineer with Pacific Crest Engineering. “We are being required by CGS to use such conservative assumptions that we believe it’s unlikely that we are going to be …

Trustees OK cuts to district's maintenance and operations, administration and music instruction in kindergarten through second grade, among other reductions.
A school resource officer, art and technology mentor positions, several curriculum consultants and custodial and administrative services were slashed Tuesday evening as Los Gatos Union School District trustees plugged a $1.2 million deficit in their 2012-13 fiscal year budget. During a packed meeting at Daves Avenue Elementary School, trustees approved the following cuts: According to Leslie Paulides, LGUSD assistant superintendent of business services, maintenance and operations cuts would amount to reducing custodial staff. Administrative cuts would include a reorganization of the district office, but she was short on specifics. Elementary schools would decrease music instruction for kindergarten through second grade and eliminate …

Superintendent Diana Abbati wanted to share this letter with Los Gatos Patch's online family of readers.
Dear Los Gatos Union School District parents, staff and community members, The combination of these three factors means that we are forced to cut our budget. We do not have another choice. These cuts will take place over the next two school years— 2012-13 and 2013-14—if the district is to remain healthy and strong. The district's Board of Education packet to be posted by Friday, Feb. 24 on the district website at http://www.lgusd.k12.ca.us/ will contain detailed information about ways we can reduce expenses. At 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, trustees will decide how to proceed during a meeting at Daves Avenue Elementary School multi-purpose room, 17770 Daves Ave., in Monte Sereno. This is not an easy situation, and there are no easy fixes. …

Budget hole during the 2012-13 fiscal year due to reduction in local, state and federal funding sources as well as program cost increases.
The Los Gatos Union School District is facing a projected $1.3 million budget deficit during the 2012-13 fiscal year, trustees, parents and teachers learned Tuesday evening during a crowded board meeting at district headquarters. Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Leslie Paulides said projections suggest that the district will run deficits and deplete its reserve by the 2014-15 fiscal year, unless changes are made. She gave trustees the following facts: Board member Scott Bloomfield said that in 2006-07, the district received more than $3 million in state funding, or approximately $1,000 per student and that state funding has been reduced dramatically to $403,000 or $130 per student for the current year. Former Fisher Middle …

Structural work has been completed and new buildings to be installed in February.
At a sparsely attended Los Gatos Union School District Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night, Leslie Paulides, assistant superintendent of facilities, gave an updated on the current status of Measure E bond funds. Los Gatos voters approved the $30 million bond measure in June of 2010 for the purpose of building a new Lexington Elementary School and addressing increasing enrollment with the improvement and building of new classrooms in the district. A portion of the Measure E Bond fund was dedicated to building several new classrooms at Louise Van Meter Elementary School. Paulides reported that the new Van Meter buildings are on schedule and that both the structural work and underground utilities have been completed. “Buildings are being …

Talk about inequity. After 11 years of paying tax dollars and two bond measures while patiently watching in the sidelines every other school get rebuilt to now face closure and the loss of a most important and valuable asset. A school that the parents worked so hard to get IB status and certification. A California Distinguished School. The only emergency evacuation shelter in the area and the …   more ›
