Los Gatos Man Takes Anti-Fan Violence Campaign to State Capitol

Despite still suffering from injuries due to his Dec. 19, 2011 beating at Candlestick Park, Manuel Austin has joined legislative efforts to curb unruly sportsmanship.

It’s been four months since Manuel Austin was brutally beaten by fans sitting in front of him and his family during a Dec. 19, 2011 San Francisco 49ers Monday night football game. The 66-year-old still suffers from persistent headaches, hearing loss in his left ear and neck and back pain related to the beating that happened at the hands of fellow fans. He’s been seeing a pain specialist weekly and said that he’s recently experienced vomiting. "This is someting that I live with everyday," Austin said. Only one of the three men who attacked him, Mark Bollock of Mendocino County, was cited for the incident. The San Francisco District Attorney, Austin said, has not prosecuted the case pending the completion of a San Francisco Police Department…

Where are the everyday heroes when things like this are happening? We need to encourage citizens to not sit idly by and let this happen. Would you let someone get beat up on the seat next to you in a plane? If not there, then why let it happen in a stadium? Those that are too small to intervene themselves could still get help from security. I thought 9/11 ended the era of passive bystanding. …   more ›

Don't Miss A 'Great Race' This Sunday

Popular 4-mile walk/run returns this weekend for its 35th year. Registration still available for those looking for fun, exercise and camaraderie.

For speed demons out there that like a relatively flat and fast course for short-distance running or power walking, the 4-mile Great Race is the perfect course. The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Los Gatos, begins at 9 a.m., Sunday, April 29 in Saratoga at 14420 Big Basin Way—between Third and Fourth streets—and follows scenic and ascending Highway 9 toward downtown Los Gatos for the finish on North Santa Cruz Avenue and Elm Street. The weather calls for sunny and clear skies this Sunday, with a high of 78 degrees, presenting a challenge to fast-and-furious athletes such as Lenin Zapata, who last year enjoyed perfect racing weather with cloudy skies and cooler temperatures. Los Gatos Rotary Great Race "starter" Joe Varozza will …

The league's 50 teams, each representing six divisions, and their families turned out for a day of food, fun and, of course, baseball. "We had games going from right after the opening ceremonies all the way until the evening," said Jeff Williams, president of the league. "It was a great day that our volunteers really put together." The day, which was dedicated to District 12 chief umpire Dan Campagnolo, started with a parade of players and the recitation of the Little League Pledge. Los Gatos Meats provided grub for the hungry althetes and fans and bounce houses were inflated to …
