Letter: Audiotapes of LGUSD Board Meetings Coming

Los Gatos Patch would love to publish your letters to the editor. Send your missives to sheila.sanchez@patch.com.

Since March 6, 2012, the Los Gatos Union School District Technology Department has been piloting a way to podcast audiotapes of our Board of Education meetings. While we still have some kinks to work out, I am happy to announce that a podcast server has been set up for public access. Audiotapes will be available on the LGUSD website by Friday, May 18, if not sooner. To clarify, new technology equipment was purchased in March 2012 for this pilot, and the District does not possess any archived board meeting audiotapes prior to the March 6, 2012 board meeting. For easy access, please click the link below: http://www.lgusd.k12.ca.us/board/meetings.php It is our intent to have worked out all the glitches beginning with the 2012-13 school year. …

Letter: Support Los Gatos Music & Arts

Los Gatos Patch would love to run your letters to the editor.

Painters, poets, playwrights, and more have called Los Gatos home for many years. Arts and culture appreciation can unlock our imagination and stir us to think and reflect, or simply entertain us. Los Gatos offers a unique selection of arts and cultural experiences in our community. From our museums, art galleries, and annual Plein Air Art Show, to readings by our town poet laureate and other programs at our new library, to our Jazz on the Plazz and Music in the Park summer concert series, we are fortunate indeed to live work and play in what is truly the gem of the Valley of Hearts Delight. You make all these programs possible. We rely solely on the generosity of our friends and supporters to produce our concerts and arts and cultural …

Letter: In Favor of Dog Off-Leash Pilot Program

Los Gatos Patch would love to publish your letters to the editor. Send your missives to sheila.sanchez@patch.com.

I have been reading that there is a lot of resistance to the proposed off-leash trial in Los Gatos. I live near Live Oak Manor Park and thought I should weigh in on the dog lover side. It seems the main concern is that there will be an increase in dog bites. Animal incidents will (rarely) occur out on the sidewalk or out in someone’s front yard when an animal has gotten loose. They could even happen in a park when a dog is on a leash but pulls free from the owner. Basically the dog owner assumes complete responsibility for his/her dog no matter where they are. We already have dog bite laws – town and county ordinances and state statutory law. Civil law provides monetary compensation for the victim, criminal laws punish the dog owner and …

Here is a link http://www.ktvu.com/ap/ap/top-news/leading-insurer-pays-109m-for-dog-bite-claims/nN7gJ/ to a story on KTVU web site containing some numbers (both dog bites and dollars). Whether or not the dog is licensed or has a responsible owner seems irrelevant. I've read many posts and commentary on this topic, it seems dog owners (and LG town council for that matter) are willing to roll the …   more ›

Letter: Los Gatos Can Achieve Cohabitation of Dogs And Humans

Los Gatos Patch would love to publish your letters to the editor. Send your missives to sheila.sanchez@patch.com.

Live Oak Manor Park is an integral part of our community. It is a haven that is enjoyed by the entire community, serving as a playground, after-school sports field, a place to sit and enjoy its beauty or read a book, and as a place where dog owners can enjoy their pets exercising and playing with other dogs. Since owning our dog, we have met and made new friends and acquaintances. We have become more involved with the care and maintenance of the park. We voluntarily police the park for everything from dog poop to broken bottles, soda cans and tossed papers. It would behoove all to see the community activity in this park on a weekend or evening. A virtual "Norman Rockwell" slice of life, if you will, with children in the play grounds, dogs …

Moms Talk Q&A

Time Out for Moms?

A camp break might just be the answer.

Last week in Moms Talk, Tamara Archer asked, Motherhood: What’s In It For You?Here’s what some of our readers had to say: Erika Taylor Montgomery: 12:19 pm on Thursday, May 3, 2012 "Being a Mom is one of the most difficult but rewarding jobs there is! I'll never forget beaming with pride as my son gave the Valedictorian speech at his high school graduation last year and had the entire audience rolling with laughter throughout!" Dyan Chan: 9:37 pm on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 "Motherhood is overwhelming--wonderful and terrible, incredibly hard and the most natural thing in the world. I love being a mother and being a daughter to my own cherished mother." Jennifer Croll: 9:34 pm on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 "I really loved that article! It is so …

Letter: Closing Lexington School Is Unconscionable

Los Gatos Patch would love to publish your letters to the editor. Send your missives to sheila.sanchez@patch.com.

I have some observations and a question I would like the Los Gatos Union School District Board of Education to answer. Lexington has survived a Civil War, Two World wars, depressions, recessions, wildfires, landslides, floods, and earthquakes – and is one of the best public schools in California. Removing this school from its current location would be unconscionable and irresponsible. Don’t allow this humble, hand-crafted, historic train to go over a cliff. Unless you put the brakes on, it is going to fall into The Court of Public Opinion and a Court of Law. Bonds B and E are contracts between Los Gatos citizens and the board. For a contract to be valid there must be a “meeting of the minds.” The meeting of the minds between Los Gatos …

Guest Column: Los Gatos Dogs Off Leash Sets the Record Straight

Organization formed in April to represent residents who favor dog off-leash program in town addresses issues raised by those who oppose pilot program at public parks.

I am the director of the organization of residents who favor an off-leash program in the Town of Los Gatos. In response to previous posts on Los Gatos Patch, I can assure you that I am dedicated to research, substantiating my positions and providing the source of my opinions and the validity of the information I am providing. As you will see, I have cited every source for the arguments and points I bring to this discussion. The number of dogs whose owners are residents of this town is in excess of 9,000 and the number of children under 16 years of age is approximately 8,000. See citation #1a below. Many of us have united to work for a reasonable solution to park usage and shared experience of the land to which we are all entitled. When you…

Gary, The proposal for Los Gatos Dog's Off Leash has nothing to do with changing any laws. The current restriction is part of the Parks and Recreation Department' Codes. The consideration is to implement a "trial period for the 3 parks in question." The Town would be authorizing a temporary code change in very small parts of each park, for very limited times of the day. This does not allow …   more ›

Letter: Dog Off-Leash Pilot is 'Experimenting' With Safety

Los Gatos Patch would love to publish your letters to the editor. Send your missives to Sheila.Sanchez@Patch.com.

About 50 or so residents attended the first community meeting at Louise Van Meter Elementary School to discuss the off-leash dog pilot. When a few moms raised concerns over child safety, one person who was for the off-leash pilot suggested with a tinge of sarcasm that a fence be built around the children's playground. Another person who was against the pilot feared the soil may become contaminated from feces. As I expected, there were a lot of statements that began with the words "my dog," and when the off-leash group was asked why they just couldn't use the Los Gatos Creek Trail Dog Park, one person said it was because there was no parking. One thing is clear when it comes to dogs, people are passionate. I am not passionate about poop not…

Jefferey- I'm just a "simple minded" Los Gatos soccer mom. I don't have M.D. after name so I'm sure you will reply using condescending big words in an attempt to make yourself look superior. When did you become the park owner? Or the Director? Are you a non-profit organization? Either way you will have NO legal right to ask anyone to leave with their dog. You guys better buy some hefty liability …   more ›

About Town

LIV'n Large

Glamorous grand opening leaves me itchin' to feel sexy again.

A few weeks ago I attended the grand opening of LIV la Vie, Los Gatos' newest clothing store. I had waited seven long years for Karen Giordano's next venture after she sold Bella Rosa Boutique, and nothing was going to stop me, not even a torrential downpour. I sloshed up the red carpet and into LIV where it was warm and lovely with the aroma of St. Barts—scented Vie Lux candles wafting through the sleek space. Right away I could tell it was going to be a fabulous night. There was champagne flowing! A D.J. spinning! Delectable bites passed around on silver platters! No sooner had I walked through the door and scored a glass of Rombauer chardonnay than a gorgeous saleswoman poured into a blush pink dress introduced herself. “Hi, I'm Gina, …
