It seems so many new buildings going up or upgrading here in Los Gatos!

Congratulations! I dedicate this quote to you: “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher…Read More explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” I believe you've done the last two very well!

What Sheila said!
Here are a few more details. The neighborhood in question has 5 elementary school…Read More age students. Three of them attend Lakeside schools (elementary at Lakeside, or middle school through the Lakeside district). Those three children wanted to stay in Lakeside, and their families opposed the transfer. Two other students are the children of the petitioner in this territory transfer. If they wanted to attend Loma Prieta schools, they could do so easily already (either by just enrolling in middle school there, or filing an inter district transfer request, which would be virtually guaranteed to be approved). Instead, those two children are being home schooled.

The parcels are currently in the Lakeside Joint Union School District. The children who live in…Read More those parcels are in the attendance area of the LJUSD. The parcels did want to become a part of Loma Prieta. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Wonderful idea for a good cause! It’s about time Los Gatos had a great cookbook!…Read More The cover graphics really look enticing! Your victim blaming makes the whole affair even more tragic. I do not think the boys did it before,…Read More so what. Starting at 15 with raping people (which it is, even if Californian law does not call it so) is quite early, anyway. Her sexual history is of no relevance outside of Rapeculture City, which seems to be where you reside. Her suicidal hstory might be of relevance. But as we learn, her parents were utterly surprised, because they would never have expected a suicide from her. So this perp-excusing allegation is also out of the window. I wonder if the perps will ever take responsibility or if they will try to find excuses like you do for the rest or their pathetic lives.
wilber sims April 19, 2013 at 04:01 am
Obviously this was a very disturbed teenage girl and the act of the boys involved is reprehensible.…Read More It appears everyone has "lawyered up" and the full investigation will begin. Had she ever tried to harm herself before? Did she have a close relationship with her parents? What was her family life like? Did she ever have intimate relations with these boys or ever show them compromising pictures of herself? Had these boys ever done anything like this before? What was this girls relationship with these boys? Were these boys impaired at the time like she was? Were these boys predatory and premeditated in this assault? Had this ever happened before with this girl?
So many questions, Such a tragedy.
Jeffrey McClanahan, M.D. April 18, 2013 at 05:34 pm
The trail of tears involving this investigation is disturbing at best. Those involved seem to have…Read More been quickly and certainly identified. However, the county Sheriff has related that the reason for delay of their incarceration has been the underlying concern to make certain that the perpetrators of this heinous crime do not escape justice on a technicality. What really bothers me is that our public school system has seen fit to provide no evidence that they are cooperating or even taking seriously the actions of certain members of the football team. If there were a similar allegation against the members of area college teams, they would have been suspended pending investigation. Instead, the LGSHS system has chosen to deny, deflect and refute even though they are not a law enforcement body. What are they hiding, why and who is behind this reprehensible behavior that resulted in this tragic loss of life.

This is one of the most disturbing cases that I have heard. As a graduate of LGHS district myself, I…Read More feel particulary infuriated at the lack of action taken by the district and MOST SPECIFICALLY the SHS principal Paul Robinson. The fact that the SHS principal,Paul Robinson, only expelled these young men from the football team and NOT from school is unacceptable. The principal claimed that he could not expell theses young men due to the fact that the assault did not occur on or at a school function. I beg to differ: what does he call the circulation of pictures of a feloney sexual battery on school grounds? This seems like a crime occuring on school grounds to me- very disturbing... PAUL ROBINSON'S lack of action caused a victim to be repeatedly assulted by her attackers while at school by allowing circulation of the horrid picture(s) unhindered. The district should be ahsamed. Furthermore, the LGHS/SHS district needs to make immediate changes in dealing with assaults against women. Women should have the right to attend school without fear of physical or psychological attacks and bullying. This lack of action by the school district condones the atrocious behavior of these young men. Being taken off the football team? Please! This was a criminal act that was blatantly ignored by the administration. Join me in calling for Paul Robinson to be dismissed as principal of SHS.

The silence from the school board is very troubling to me. Have they pushed for meetings and…Read More discussion at both high schools for open communication with the students or are they too worried about law suits to make meaningful progress? Are they reviewing the actions and comments by the SHS principal? While the principal may not be legally responsible - the courts will determine this I'm sure - there is a moral angle where the Board Needs to take the Bull by the Horns and address the issues at hand. If nothing else they owe it to the students to deal with it openly and honestly .....

The rape statistics you reported are untrue. Date rape, which accounts for over 86% of all rapes,…Read More has been significantly increasing in recent years. This devastating crime can have a life-long affect (or at least a long-term affect) on women. Furthermore, morality has unfortunately changed in regards to this issue. Kids see nothing wrong with posting pictures, etc on Facebook/other that further compounds this crime. Until the punishment is severe enough, things are unlikely to change much. My heart goes out to the victim as well as her family. What a tragic crime.

Sorry piglet but I can't see where the school shares any blame for these horrific events. The…Read More Internet is a tool, nothing more. How that tool is used is an individual responsibility. The school may make available online access opportunities but do you really think these offending posts were made while on a library computer or something? The school didn't "let " the kids have Internet access to bully. As for parents letting minors use the Internet unsupervised, remember these are 16 year olds, While that doesn't mean they should have no parental supervision or guidance, it's unrealistic to think people of this age can be - or NEED to be - under constant surveillance. Do you even understand that "access to the Internet" is not limited to a venue where Mom or Dad can look over one's shoulder? And I don't understand your point about blogging under their real names. How on earth could the use of a pseudonym made any difference in this terrible tragedy? If anything, using their real names/accounts aided in their apprehension.

As the parents of two young woman who are graduates of Los Gatos High School - Saratoga's…Read More "sister" - this tragedy has rippled through our family albeit we never met Audrie or her brave parents. We admire the bravery of her family for bringing the story out in the open so that we can all try to make a kinder environment for our children. I find it rather ironic that a few days after it was announced that both highschools had the highest graduation rate of all schools in the area that this tragic story came to light - while we should be proud of our academic successes we really need to ask ourselves the difficult and more important question of how we can create a kinder and more caring environment so this never happens again yet still maintain our academic successes - this maybe an exception but the two should not be mutually exclusive

I was impressed by the numbers but would be curious on a more detailed look at the real reasons for…Read More the success rather than just flattering ourselves and thinking that all of our children and teachers are "Above Average". Having two girls in University now that received excellent educations at LGHS, Fisher and Daves - they DO a great job preping for college especially if one takes the AP classes - I've withnessed the quality of many of the teachers and the administration at LGHS but is that the real secret? Sure the average LGHS parent probably has a higher educational background and income levels but if I remember correctly we even had better numbers than Palo Alto - home of a world class university. I feel it is important that we really understand this so the state can share the formula with other schools as all children deserve an excellent education - not just ours ......

Jeffrey,
Actually, we (the federal government) pay for particle accelerators...with some left over.…Read More Universities NEVER get the short end of the funding stick when it deals with DARPA, NIH, etc. In fact, sometimes universities become piggish (e.g., Stanford in the mid-1990's). I agree, if you do not search for the truth...you are a pawn of some factor or person. We need fewer pawns...
Jeffrey Bottaro April 1, 2013 at 08:09 pm
Green Flash: All of your statements make sense to me, and I fundamentally agree. Unfortunately,…Read More the incursion of ANY industry into the University marketplace has a way of corrupting it in proportion to the financial size of the outside presence. This is not to renounce such things; it is merely a plea to scrutinize them in proportion to their influence. Athletes are not asked to finance the particle accelerator; why should physicists be made to finance the gridiron?
The University was born of communities of cloistered priests and monks. Its interface with the world will always be a thing with contradictions and complexities that defy simple solutions. BUT, anyone who succumbs to the pressure NOT to look behind the wizard's curtain is not only denying himself the indulgence of a universal human impulse; he is also BETRAYING HIS OWN INTEGRITY.

I can understand not having the third party events there. I hope this compromise works.
Tom Brown March 21, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Scott, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, you've fallen for a common misconception. The term…Read More 'private' is not synonymous with 'for profit', it just means not Government owned/funded. There are for profit educational organizations such as Bridgepoint Education (BPI) but Hillbrook is most certainly not one of these. Rather, Hillbrook uses additional donated funds to provide educational assistance for over 20% of all the students at Hillbrook many of whom would not otherwise be able to attend and would need to receive their education from the Government. I hope this helps clarify the difference and perhaps given your obvious altruism towards the needs of our community's children, you might start to see that Hillbrook's mission parallel's your own in developing and giving opportunities to children...without making any profit.
