i don't believe the developer is "blackmailing" the town here, merely being honest. heRead More wants to build a facility with a minimum viable square footage. its commercial property. it is only viable when the numbers match up. netflix is growing. they aren't going to adopt a new campus they have to leave in two years, nor would any leading firm. and no, they aren't going to work underground for the same reasons you don't live underground. all of the businesses that locate in los gatos have a choice. if we set our minds to driving them away, we will probably succeed. look at saratoga - mission accomplished, the town is dead. frankly i would not put a major campus in los gatos - santa clara is more accomodating and has a better location. how long do town residents expect prospective businesses to wrestle with our government? the critics last night seemed strangely wedded to the already-anachronistic "town plan". people seem to envision this as enforcing the bucolic life of a norman rockwell painting, but its merely a legal mandate to retain 1980s sprawl and an ongoing love affair with the car. growth will happen folks, the los gatos town council can't stop it. it will either go up or out. the town plan mandates "out", so that means cars. residents, start your engines. after the meeting last night i would rate the chance of success for netflix at about 33%.

100% agree with this letter, and with the comment by AR above. Allowing this project will not harmRead More LG's downtown character (I submit that the tribble-like expansion of nail salons and a shampoo store at the old Domus space has already done the damage). This project is on the teetering edge of LG - it's not on Kennedy Road, or in the Manor, or on N. Santa Cruz Avenue. Most LG residents will only get a glancing view when they venture over to Courtside Club. It's not a matter of "bowing to developers' interests." It's a matter of not being business-hostile. If we continue to shun business in the name of preserving our small-town character, we will no longer have a small town to defend. I've lived in the Shannon/Kennedy area of LG, and in the Aventino apartments located right behind Netflix. Netflix has been the perfect neighbor - quiet, and conscious of making minimal impact on traffic. I probably heard more traffic noise living in the Kennedy area than at Aventino. To say that LG is overly accommodating of the project is inaccurate. If anything, the developers have been bending over backwards to meet every demand of the opposition, yet the opposition continues. Why such a fuss to replace an unsightly office building with updated structures and a tenant that's proven to be a benefit to Los Gatos? I join with the position of We Support Los Gatos.

So we have to give in to a developer's demands to keep funding for our schools? That seems a littleRead More black and white to me. Sure, I'd like to keep Netflix in town, but I don't want to be bullied into sacrificing town standards to do so. Netflix could relocate, go out of business, or change their building requirements without asking us. This isn't all about Netflix, it's about what kind of town we want to be. Are we the town that puts business and developer priorities first? Or a town that protects homeowners and neighborhoods? I'm a parent of two kids at Fisher, and I care as much as anyone about the excellence of our schools. But I'm not convinced this tax revenue is really critical to the school's success. For my kids, I'm more worried about losing this wonderful small-town community that we're so lucky to have. As we move into North Forty development, let's not set a precedent that we'll regret.

Oh how I wish I'd seen this sooner. My daughter loves Purrsnickety... her favorite store in LosRead More Gatos! She'll be bummed to hear they're closing. Hopefully we can get down there this week to say thank you and happy retirement. Sad though that they won't sell it.

I read this morning in the Merc that they will not be allowed to pass it on to us. But that's aRead More laugh. They will find a way.
Ganeshamouse May 8, 2013 at 05:52 pm
It would be nice if there were a provision in the final ruling that says PG&E is not allowed toRead More recoup the fine money by raising rates. Customers are going to end up being punished for PG&E's negligence, because of corporate greed. What a world.
Larry Arzie May 8, 2013 at 03:43 pm
We could make the fine higher and put them into receivership, then have the State take over thisRead More highly profitable company. Oops, but then there will never be any infrastructure upgrade. Sort of what Los Gatos did with our Sewer System. We sold it to the County after years of letting it fall into disrepair. Now it is costing us on our property tax bills. Government often make a mess of things. P.G.E. is being allowed to fix it's decades old problems, write it off as capital improvements and I bet still make a handsome profit for years. Nationalizing is sounding better.

The Cherry Pickers have told me almost nothing about the buildings. Why has the developer has onlyRead More done minimal displays? Perhaps because the public would not support the large buildings if they actually saw their size, scale and mass. Not one of the buildings has all four corners shown. Not any of the Cherry Pickers have netting from one Picker to another. The buildings will be so large, and so close to the residential homes and the freeway, how illuminated will this e at night for all those concerned? Please reduce the density of this project and keep it in line with current Town Plan governance.
Rick Ford May 2, 2013 at 05:11 pm
As anyone can see, these proposed buildings will be very tall, probably twice as tall as what isRead More already there. Anyone driving by will see them. Most of the trees will be cut down. Even though the traffic study concluded that there would not be significantly more traffic, I don't buy it. If you drive by this area on Winchester blvd heading towards highway 17 or downtown Los Gatos around 4:30 or 5pm you will see long lines of cars already, especially on Fridays. Can you imagine what it will be like with 1,000 or so more cars? I urge everyone to think long about this, go look at the sight, then contact the town council. It is good to have the revenue but this project is so large and extreme. Maybe if they kept the buildings at 2 story, 30 ft instead of 80 ft tall, eliminated the giant parking structure, cut the number of office buildings in half with more affordable quality housing, kept most of the trees it may be okay, It may even be better to just leave as is or just renovate and improve the existing buildings, or even make a city park out of this place. It really is a nice woodsy area, the kind of place that Los Gatos is known for, as the gateway to the redwoods and beach. I think its much better to be known for this than just another bedroom community or part of San Jose with all of its massive over development. Other wise I don't think it is a good idea for the town of Los Gatos residents, or its future and and we will probably all regret it later.
Maria Ristow April 5, 2013 at 11:15 pm
The cherry pickers give a vague clue to the height of the buildings, but not the mass. Maybe it'sRead More not feasible, but the same orange mesh that neighborhood remodels are required to use would be very helpful. I have walked, biked, and driven past the project, and it's difficult to imagine the full impact. The cherry pickers can be blocked by trees at certain angles-- the possible future buildings will not be. I imagine most people would be stunned by the proposed buildings.

At age 10 used to go there with friends for 25 cents on a hot summer's night. Wonderful memory!

There used to be a Theater in old town and they replaced it with Borders. Now Borders is gone andRead More everything is very corporate. There isn't very much of the old Los Gatos left and the town has lost a lot of it's charm. Los Gatos will soon be the Santana Row Corporation.
Jeanne Rajabzadeh March 31, 2013 at 04:41 pm
I really miss the Los Gatos Theater, it will be very exciting to have a state of the art venue.

Sheila. Any updates or news on activity in getting businesses into old Live Oak Kitchen space, oldRead More Liquor store space, and/or old consignment store space??? This is not going Green. A business like this has a huge carbon foot print to offset. All lightingRead More will need to be converted to LED and forget AC. Leasing Solar system should be mandatory. Employee's should ride their bike to work at least three days a week. The power used to make the clothes should also be green. The clothes should also be 100% biodegradable. All shipping material should be 100% recyclable. After the plastic bag ban, tennis shoes will be banned. Shoe manufactures are already working to make shoes out of hemp. In the near future, I think a business owner will be able to purchase "Carbon Credits" until these other items are fixed. Let's not lower our standards just to LOOK like we are doing something. Full implementation of Agenda 21 are coming soon. Start planning now!!

asking people to shop locally for sentimental reasons is a nonstarter. most commodity retail as youRead More know it now will be gone in ten years...once amazon opens its same-day shipping facility in patterson, you will be able to order commodity goods at 10am and have them at your door at 2pm. no local merchant selling commodity goods can compete with that. restaurants and craft merchants can't be commoditized, they have a chance at survival. as for domus...i tried to go in there once but the lady at the desk said you had to be seventy or older to enter (just kidding). i really don't see the nostalgia for that place, last i checked it was greeting cards and coffee mugs. time marches on.

Parking is scarce indeed there.
