Made in America

From Stetsons to Fascinators: Hats are not just for the Brits

I thought this week would be appropriate to write about fashions that are still  being made in the U.S. According to Diane Sawyer’s series “Made in America,”  nearly 60 percent of everything we buy is made overseas, so I thought finding U.S.-made fashions may be a bit of a challenge.

I needed to run some errands in town so I thought I would start scouting around to see what I could find. I grabbed the first available parking space on Santa Cruz Avenue which happened to be next to a couple of sidewalk sale racks that enticed me into a well stocked accessory boutique called

The first thing I notice is a display of Stetsons with a prominent Made in America tag! I asked the sales person if they carried other U.S.-made products. She gladly began to show me a wide selection of products from functional shade hats, gorgeous jewelry to extremely affordable designer handbags (I drooled over a '50s inspired Dior-like black patent leather by Bravo.) Yet, the most striking accessories were the designed by one of the hottest new young hat designers, Arturo Rios. Rios has become a fashion favorite among style publications, as well as with trendsetters Daisy Fuentes and Paris Hilton.

A fascinator is the most feminine way to wow a crowd and flaunt your confidence.  Fascinators can be lavish and extravagant, or subtly understated. There are feathers, birds, and flower explosions, to simple elegant teardrop shapes with delicate veiling. Fascinators do all the accessorizing work and draw attention to the eyes, our most powerful communication tool.

Hats and headpieces are perhaps not only the most overlooked fashion accessory, a hat can also hide a bad hair day and no one will be the wiser.
