Los Gatos Library Summer Reading Program Under Way

The Los Gatos Library Summer Reading Program, a family event hosted by your local librarians and the Friends of the Los Gatos Library, began May 31 and continues through Aug. 10.

On June 18, Los Gatos Library Manager Heidi Long took time during the Council meeting to explain the program to the community saying that summer is the time when children, parents and caregivers can enjoy books, have fun reading and win prizes at the same time.

"You're never too young or too old to read or be read to," Long said while addressing a large crowd of children and parents who attended the meeting.

The program, with the theme of "Dream Big Read!" kicked off May 31 with a special presentation from Captain Jack Spareribs, who juggled, performed magic tricks, ventriloquism and other entertaining acts.

On Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m., the program will include a special presentation on bats giving the public a chance to learn about the world’s only flying mammal. The fascinating nocturnal creature will be at the library and everyone is welcome to attend. 

Anyone can sign up for the program, said Long. That means newborn babies and adults can register until July 31 to participate and they can either sign up in person at the Los Gatos Library, 100 Villa Ave., next to Town Hall, or online by clicking here.

"It's easy to participate. It's free and it's fun," Long said. "You set your own reading goals, you log your own books ... if you reach your goal by Aug. 10, you win a prize donated by the Friends and all programs are sponsored by the Friends."

What do you do to earn a prize?

You can attend the various library programs where raffles will be held at each of them. If you meet your reading goal by Aug. 10 and complete an online or paper form declaring this you will be eligible for a final prize, said Long.

The program's finale takes place Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. and will include campfire songs and children, parents and grandparents are invited to join library staff for good old-fashioned campfire song sing-along and prizes.

All programs are funded through generous support from the Friends of the Los Gatos Library.
