Los Gatos Library Designated as Cooling Station

With warming temperatures, town officials have selected new facility for seniors and others needing relief from heat.

With the warming temperatures upon us and summer officially starting June 20, town officials have selected the , 100 Villa Ave., right next to the Civic Center, as the official cooling station for those vulnerable to the heat.

That includes seniors, children and those who might be ill or have no other protection during certain days from expected rising temperatures this summer.

Los Gatos Town Manager Greg Larson announced the new facility will be open to the public needing relief from heat 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 400 Americans die from heat exposure each year.

Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are two common conditions and those at greatest risk are older, less active seniors whose dwelling units may be poorly ventilated and children under 4, the mentally ill, the obese and people who are ill or taking certain medications.
