VIDEO: Tarzan's Gang Pounds Jungle Run

More than 1,800 runners/walkers participate in eighth-annual 10K, half marathon Sunday morning at Los Gatos High School.

After eight years, the Jungle Run proved Sunday morning that it continues to be a "wildly" fun time for people of all ages.

More than 1,800 people gathered at the Los Gatos High School track to either run or walk in the race's 10K (6.2 mile), or the half marathon (21.1 kilometers, or 13.1 miles).

“There's a guy that's been here every year that registers himself as 'Tarzan the Monkey Man' and wears a loincloth. I think he's won his age group every year,” said Jungle Run race director Tom Cotton.

There was an 8-year old and a 72-year-old running veteran. There were even running teams that had been training for months to participate in the fun athletic event.

Among them was the Fleet Feet Sports team from Menlo Park. “We've gone through the course before, and Vasona Park is nice, because of the shade from the trees,” said one team member.

The race was presented by Los Gatos-based Firstwave Events.

The 21.1K started at Los Gatos High School and traveled up to Los Gatos Boulevard, then Blossom Hill Road, connecting to Winchester Boulevard. Runners followed that to Knowles Drive, then Los Gatos Creek Trail and Vasona Park, working their way back to the high school.

The 10K followed a similar route until it reached Blossom Hill Road, where runners instead go into Vasona Park and then return to the high school.

Cotton said the event continues to grow annually since its inception in 2002, with 1,800 participants this year, up from 1,500 last year.

FirstWave Events also puts on the Santa Cruz Half Marathon and 10K run/walk in April, the Big Kahuna Triathlon in September in Santa Cruz and the Jungle Run.

"It's a community event for local folks," Cotton said. "We do get some people from as far away as Louisiana and Washington, D.C. We had a great turnout, great weather; nobody got injured."
