GIRLS SOCCER: Los Gatos and Monta Vista Play to a Scoreless Draw

De Anza title hopes slip away for 'Cats after draw against Matadors.

Los Gatos 0, Monta Vista  0

The Star: The Los Gatos High defense, anchored by senior keeper Heather Rouhier, kept Monta Vista’s scoring chances held down throughout the key Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division affair.

The Turning Point: With both sides not giving up an inch on either side of the field, a fortunate save by the extra defender saved the host Matadors. Los Gatos (11-2-6, 6-0-5) sophomore forward Hannah Rosenberg blasted a shot off the cross bar in the 12th minute, the near score instead rung off the bar before the ball was sent safely away from the Monta Vista (7-6-5, 5-3-3 De Anza) net.

The Quote: "They (Monta Vista) were applying pressure on us everywhere early." —Los Gatos girls soccer coach Jan Eric Nordmo said about his teams struggles in the first half to take control of the action. “In the second half, we started to settle down. They didn’t give us much and looked like they were playing for the tie late. We can’t catch Mountain View now, but we are going to the playoffs.”

What's Next? Los Gatos finishes off league play against Gunn High-Palo Alto next Wednesday afternoon at Los Gatos High. Central Coast Section playoff action begins the following week.

Bottom Line: Needing a win to keep the heat on first place Mountain View in the SCVAL De Anza title race, the nil-nil tie closed the door on the title talk for Los Gatos. Instead, Los Gatos will either finish in second or third place in league and will look to make some noise in the upcoming CCS playoffs. Senior midfielder Brianne Medved, who leads the ‘Cats with nine goals, missed Friday afternoon’s game due to a college visit. The talented midfielder was visiting Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, but will be back on the field next week for the ‘Cats senior day regular season finale. Mt. View High leads the division with a 7-1-3 record in league. Los Gatos defeated Mt. View 2-1 on Jan.12 and tied them 2-2 in the rematch on Feb. 2 in Los Gatos.
