This is one of more than 100 free community events offered throughout Santa Clara County as part of SVR, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The events are focused on the theme “Muslim and American: Two Perspectives.”
Other activities planned for Los Gatos include a panel discussion at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at the on the topic “Paranoid Politics – Islamophobia, McCarthyism and the Yellow Peril” and a talk by Todd Parr, author of the pre-K book It’s OK To Be Different, at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 22, at the Los Gatos Library.
Los Gatos Councilwoman Diane McNutt has coordinated SVR—the regional program that asks everyone in Santa Clara County to read the same books at the same time and talk about them—for nine years.
McNutt, a voracious reader, said this is the program's most ambitious year due to its controversial theme, which has caught the attention of and engaged the community.
"We ended up with more than 100 events because of the enthusiastic response to the book selections and this topic, which is so relevant in our diverse region," she said.
The program had more than 600 people at its Jan. 25 kick-off event at the Campbell Heritage Theater and McNutt said she expects that thousands of Silicon Valley residents will read one or more of the books and attend at least one of the events scheduled throughout Santa Clara County.
"Our goal is to encourage reading, thinking, dialogue and sharing of different perspectives," she said, explaining she's coordinating the program as part of her business, McNutt & Company, Inc. Public Relations.
