Update: School Supe Resigns to Take Milpitas Position

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District confirmed Superintendent Cary Matsuoka's resignation in a formal notice on Wednesday.

Update: The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District announced Cary Matsuoka's resignation Wednesday in a press release. The release stated that he has accepted a new job as superintendent of , starting July 1.

Matsuoka will be under a three-year-contract with the Milpitas Unified School District, with a starting salary of $206,400, according to Marsha Grilli,  board president for the Milpitas school district.

The release further stated that the school board will begin its search for a new superintendent within the next two weeks and that it plans to reach out to community members for input on the selection.

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District may be experiencing some big changes, as word recently broke out that the district's superintendent, Cary Matsuoka, plans to leave his position of five years to assume the top job at the Milpitas Unified School District, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times and Saratoga News reported Wednesday.

Although neither a formal notice detailing Matsuoka's resignation nor an announcement from the Milpitas Unified Board of Education have yet to be made, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times reported that Matsuoka expects to announce his plans sometime next week.

Matsuoka would be taking over the role of Milpitas' district superintendent, Karl Black, who submitted his retirement notice earlier this year. Black is supposedly on his way out after being reprimanded for an alleged affair with an elementary-school teacher, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times reported.

After getting Black's notice, the Milpitas school board to help with recruiting candidates. The final interviews were conducted May 22-23, with the projected start date of the new superintendent being July 15.

The Milpitas Unified Board of Education is expected to announce the name of its new superintendent at a special meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District is comprised of two comprehensive high schools, Los Gatos and Saratoga, and an alternative high school program, Nova. About 3,100 students were enrolled at the two comprehensive high schools in the 2009-10 school year. 

Milpitas Unified serves nearly 10,000 students in nine elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one continuation high school. The district also includes preschool and adult school.
