Los Gatos Union School District Celebrates 150th Anniversary

Week-long celebration takes place Sept. 23-27.

The Los Gatos Union School District will celebrate its 150th anniversary Monday, Sept. 23 with a week-long series of open houses at all of its five campuses.

"Since LGUSD is almost as old as Los Gatos itself, this is really a celebration for the entire Los Gatos community. This is a time to acknowledge our past and
celebrate our future," the district said in a press release announcing the milestone.

LGUSD has grown from a one-room schoolhouse in 1860 to a thriving district with four elementary schools and a middle school serving more than 3,100 students, according to district officials.

Daves Avenue Elementary, Lexington Elementary, Blossom Hill Elementary, Louise Van Meter Elementary and R.J. Fisher Middle schools will unveil a 150th anniversary art piece produced by students, the Los Gatos Education Foundation and the Art Docents of Los Gatos.

The festivities will end at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos where families will enjoy boat shows on the lake as well as kayaks, canoes, paddle boats and sailboats to rent.

There will be many children’s activities including pony rides, petting zoos, face painting, balloons, caricatures, a climbing wall, sports, local wineries, restaurants, vendors and government agencies.

The events are as follows:

  • 3:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23: R.J. Fisher Middle School, historical scavenger hunt, raffle, history slide show and alumni talk
