Los Gatos Rising Star Gymnastics Helps Children Build Confidence

Instructor Ella Chekhanovskaya teaches popular sport in a fun, non-pressure environment at Los Gatos Youth Recreation Center.

Half a dozen darling little girls gathered Thursday afternoon at the Los Gatos Youth Recreation Center, 123 E. Main St., to have a good time, socialize and practice gymnastics with the help of instructor Ella Chekhanovskaya.

Wearing colorful leotards and tights, they ran after each other, stretched, tumbled and performed other fun exercises to the delight of parents present in the small gym inside the center.

Chekhanovskaya holds a bachelor's degree in physical education and is a certified gymnastics instructor, safety certified, who has a professional membership with USA Gymnastics.

Mom Shawn Sloan said Chekhanovskaya is a great teacher who doesn't pressure the children and teaches them at their own pace, giving individual attention to each student. "It's a small group and I really like that about it," Sloan said, while watching daughter Gracie, 7, doing agility exercises.

The one-hour class meets once a week and lasts two months. It's one of many offered by Los Gatos Saratoga Recreation, a nonprofit agency formed in 1956 through a joint powers agreement with the local school districts in Los Gatos and Saratoga.
