Los Gatos Kiwanis Club Gives $8K in Turnaround Scholarships

Eight Los Gatos Saratoga Union High School District seniors are recognized for overcoming academic challenges.

The Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos held its 15th annual Turnaround Scholarship awards luncheon the afternoon of May 16 to recognize eight deserving Los Gatos Saratoga Union High School District seniors for their academic achievements.

The youth were selected after being recommended by their high school counselors.

The award is given to students unable to achieve sufficient grade point average during their freshman year to qualify for an academic scholarship but worked hard to achieve 3.5 to 4.0 GPA during their senior year, explained Los Gatos Kiwanis Club spokeswoman Rosalie Patterson.

Many students go on to four-year colleges and take challenging courses, Patterson added.

This year's recipients are:

  • Jenessa Anderson, Los Gatos High School, nominated by counselor Amy Gutierrez
  • Ariana MacAskill, Los Gatos High School, nominated by counselor Tamera Parks
  • Cameron Trautman, Los Gatos High School, nominated by counselor Kassandra Cochran
  • Marco Trinidad, Los Gatos High School, nominated by counselor Kassandra Cochran
  • Trieu Hoang, Nova Alternative High School, nominated by counselor Cheryl Hodgin-Marshal
  • Nick Delfino, Saratoga High School, nominated by Tim Lugo, counselor
  • Hope Ryan, Saratoga High School, nominated by counselor Eileen Allen
  • Edward White, Saratoga High School, nominated by Alinna Satake
"The Turnaround Scholarship program is important because it honors students who work hard to change their academic futures," Patterson said. "We recognize kids who work harder than the average student to improve their grades, learn leadership skills and enroll in four-year colleges and universities."

The students will also be recognized during their respective awards nights at their schools, Patterson said.

The Los Gatos Kiwanis Club raises funds to support local education programs through its annual Fiesta de Artes art and wine festival planned for 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 10-11 at the Los Gatos Civic Center, she added.
