The Performing Arts Department at Los Gatos High School presents Neil Simon's "The Good Doctor" play at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 16 at the Prentiss Brown Theatre, 20 High School Court in Los Gatos.

The comedy is based on some of Anton Chekhov's short stories.

"It is not so much a play, but rather a series of comical sketches of some of Chekhov's stories, with the common thread of a character called the Writer tying everything together. The story occurs inside the Writer’s head with chaotic ideas popping in and out, and the audience never quite knowing just what to expect next," said play spokeswoman Sue Ann Lorig in describing the comedy.

To continue with the theme about writing, the production has chosen to collect donations for two nonprofit organizations combating illiteracy.

Book donations will be collected for the Los Gatos Public Library, as well as monetary donations for First Book, an organization that provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books, Lorig said.

A matinee is scheduled 2 p.m. Nov. 16.

"The Good Doctor" is the second show directed by Nielson who also directed last year’s highly successful spring musical "Urinetown."

Tickets are 15 for adults, $7 for students and can be purchased by clicking here.
