The Cats Estate Has Been Sold

The historic Cats Estate, 17525 Santa Cruz Highway, appears to have been sold by its listing agent, Duane Adam, according to information posted on the famous realtor's website.

It's not known the exact amount of the transaction, but in May, Adam had told Los Gatos Patch that the historic property consisted of nine parcels.

Five had been put on the market for $6.8 million and the other remaining four properties were being considered to be sold separately to help find a new owner for the land.

The original five parcels, which consists of 36.76 acres, including the three famous houses and artwork, was on the market for $6,850,000, Adam said.

The additional four parcels had not been individually priced, but included with the estate were being offered for $7,999,950. All nine parcels total 75.46 acres.Originally all nine parcels were being offered together.

"Yes I can confirm the Cats Estate is now a pending sale," Adam said in an email to Los Gatos Patch Wednesday morning. "It went into contract on Nov. 11, 2013 and the sale includes all nine parcels in the original offering."

While he couldn't disclose the price or buyers' names until the sale closes, Adam said the group that bought the land "includes a local visionary who is the ideal person to take the estate into its next phase. I think all in Los Gatos will be thrilled by the future of this well loved property."

The property's deed is under the original owners' names, the late Diane and Bruce Ogilvie.

Those benefiting from the sale are their immediate children who are a part of a family trust, Adam explained.

In May, Adam said he had prospective buyers with three interested parties.

He also said he had met with a group called Friends of the Cats Estate, which had tried to raise funds to buy the property, but later disbanded.

Some members of that group had joined another one with the same mission—to raise enough money to purchase the property preserve it as a public trust, he said in May.

He said members of the group include John Agg, the former executive director of The Museums of Los Gatos; and Sara Wood Smith, the great-great granddaughter of original owner and famed writer C.E.S. Wood.
