'Spare the Air' Alert Issued For Saturday
High temperatures and low winds are expected to contribute to unhealthy smog levels in the region.
Air quality officials have issued a "Spare the Air" alert in the Bay Area for Saturday, Sept. 7 because of unhealthy smog levels expected in the region.
High temperatures and low winds on Saturday are expected to pair with motor vehicle exhaust to create the unhealthy ozone accumulation, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which issues the alerts.
The alert is the sixth issued by the air district in 2013 and comes with recommendations for Bay Area residents to take public transit, walk or bike instead of driving around the region.
Motor vehicles are responsible for about half of the Bay Area's air pollution, according to the district. Anyone planning to exercise outdoors is advised to do so in the morning hours when ozone levels are lower, district officials said.
There is no free transit related to the Spare the Air alert and there is no wood burning ban in place, according to the district. More information about the alerts can be found online atwww.sparetheair.org or by calling (800) HELP-AIR.
