Small Quake Strikes Bay Area Tonight
3.9-magnitude shaker downgraded from higher intensity.
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 struck the Bay Area tonight, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck at 8:16 p.m. and was centered about 1 mile east of Berkley with a depth of 6 miles, the USGS said.
The USGS initially said the preliminary magnitude was 4.2 and downgraded to 3.9, according to their website.

The temblor created a large jolt in San Francisco's Civic Center area, Nob Hill, Richmond District, and the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and was felt in parts of the region including Danville.
