Robert Schultz Selected as Los Gatos Town Attorney

Former City of Morro Bay attorney to replace longtime Los Gatos town attorney Judith Propp, who's retiring.

The Los Gatos Town Council unanimously approved the hiring of Robert William Schultz as the new town attorney at its regular meeting Monday evening, Dec. 2.

He begins his duties Dec. 12, replacing current town attorney Judith J. Propp, who's retiring.

Schultz has more than 25 years of experience, most recently as the city attorney for the City of Morro Bay.

Schultz’ base salary is $185,000 per year and relocation expenses are reimbursable up to $10,000. He will also receive a $350 monthly auto allowance and leave and benefits accorded to town's executive management employees.

He has also provided legal services for the cities of Atascadero, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo and served the San Simeon Community Services District and the Guadalupe Redevelopment Agency.

Schultz has also been appointed to serve on the California League of Cities Administrative Services Committee; the California League of Cities Economic, Development and Housing Committee; the California League of Cities Medical Marijuana Committee; and the California League of Cities Executive Board Selection Committee, the town said in a press release.

“It is an honor to be selected as the town attorney and I am excited about living and working in Los Gatos” said Schultz.

Los Gatos Mayor Steve Leonardis stated, “Rob immediately impressed us with his straightforward, approachable and open style. The town attorney is such an important position and we are pleased to have found such a well-regarded expert in municipal law with a lot of experience in handling sensitive land use issues.

"The Council and I admire Rob’s dedication to public service and we anticipate a smooth and seamless transition,” Leonardis added.

Schultz was selected from a pool of 90 candidates from throughout the country, according to the release.

His recruitment was launched when Propp, whose last day on the job is Dec. 27, announced her retirement after serving for several years as the town attorney for Los Gatos.

Schultz grew up in Orange County and graduated in 1986 from Southwestern University School of Law.

He has been married for 26 years to Emilie and they have three children, Ryan, Curtis and Holly.
