Reader Photos: Space Shuttle Endeavour Flyover

Several Los Gatos and Monte Sereno residents sent photos of the historic moment to Los Gatos Patch to share with our online family of readers and users. Thank you and enjoy!

Monte Sereno resident Doug McNeil sent these photos to us of the Space Shuttle Endeavour flyover Friday morning, which he captured from the south end of the Moffett Field runway near Lockheed and Motorola and north of Highway 237 in Mountain View.

The location had the longest exposure and the best lighting for taking pictures, he said, adding that the 20,000 folks standing at NASA Ames Research Center had to shoot photos directly into the sun.

"It was fun to see people of all ages attend the event. As you're standing there, you realize that a large percentage of the population has never seen the Shuttle other than a TV broadcast," McNeil said.

When the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Endeavour flew over the response from the crowd was impressive, he added.

He recalled how in 1979 he was an intern at NASA Ames and worked in the ARC-Jet Wind tunnel testing the Shuttle HRSI tiles.

"It was a great tribute to see NASA celebrate and pay tribute to 30 years of the Shuttle program. As one chapter comes to an end, the new chapter provides opportunity for the next generation of engineers and scientists to explore the far reaches of space," McNeil said.

Channel 4 news interviewed several spectators, including McNeil. "It was proud moment to honor an era where science and technology was a national priority. The goal should be to continue mentoring youth to empower them to be the next generation of spacefaring Scientists, Technologists, Engineers and Mathematicians (STEM)."

Similarly, Los Gatos resident Mary F. Cimino Lucia posted on our Los Gatos Patch Facebook page two photos of Endeavour flying over the town at about 10:40 a.m. She described the experience as "exciting and thrilling."
