Los Gatos Library Books Now On Kindle

Free e-books will now be available for patrons on their Kindle device.

At long last you can borrow e-books from the and read them on your Kindle, said librarian Henry Bankhead.

OverDrive, the major e-book provider for libraries, has just implemented a feature that allows users to choose delivery to a Kindle device when they check out e-books, Bankhead explained.

The feature is available now at the Northern California Digital Library that includes the Los Gatos Public Library.

As part of the checkout process, the user can choose Kindle format or e-pub (for Nook and everything else), Bankhead said.

After choosing Kindle, and clicking the download button, library patrons will be redirected to the Amazon site where they can log in to their Amazon account and choose which registered Kindle device or Kindle app device to which the e-book should be delivered.

The book is then wirelessly delivered to the device.

Patrons cannot get the same book in both e-pub and Kindle formats at the same time; however they can have the same book delivered to various Kindle devices including iPad, iPhone and Android devices running the Kindle app, Bankhead said.

All e-books in the Overdrive catalog previously purchased in other formats are now available for Kindle.

There are more than 1,000 titles available right now for checkout at the Los Gatos Library, he added.

Los Gatos Library patrons who log in first with their library card number will see the maximum amount of available titles, he said.

Users can also use the e-book channel on the mobile app from Boopsie (available in the App store and the Android Market) to see all available titles.

“Libraries are a critical part of our communities,” Jay Marine, director of Kindle at Amazon, said in a statement. “And we’re excited to be making Kindle books available at more than 11,000 local libraries around the country.”

Amazon.com announced on Wednesday that Kindle and Kindle app customers can now borrow Kindle books from more than 11,000 local libraries in the United States.
