The old courthouse lot is 1.81 acres and has a 12,500 square-foot single-story structure. The minimum bid for the land is $3.7 million.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, a Los Gatos resident and former mayor, explained the lots have been declared "surplus" to be able to sell them.

"We've determined these properties are expendable," he said. "Once we do that we can put them on the market. Their appraised value is the minimum bid."

Wasserman said for years the property on Capri Drive was where local residents handled their court transactions. "They would go there. It was the local court. If you got a ticket, you went there."

Both properties are adjacent to each other, Wasserman noted, but they're two separate lots.

According to Los Gatos Town code, the properties could be used for medical and residential purposes. "Medical would be a fine use there," he said. "It's also surrounded by homes so housing is a good use, too."

All bids should be submitted to 70 West Hedding St., 11th Floor, East Wing, San Jose, California 95110 by 9:30 a.m., Nov. 29.
