Caltrans Postpones Highway 17 Paving Project

Repairs to roadway will now begin in late June instead of May 23 between Highway 9 and Lark Avenue.

Caltrans has announced the Highway 17 repaving project near Los Gatos that was expected to start on Monday has been postponed until late June.

According to Bernard Walik, a spokesman for Caltrans, the project's contractor—Bay Cities Paving and Grading—has pushed out the work's start date, blaming the bad weather and its impact on other projects that need to be completed before it starts repairing Highway 17, on the stretch between Highway 9 and south of Highway 85.

Once the exact date is established in late June, Walik said Caltrans would give the media the new schedule.

The $3.6 million project will consist of pouring concrete and asphalt on certain sections, asphalt overlay pavement on Highway 17 and the same material on the on-and-off ramps at the junction of Highway 9 and Lark Avenue, Walik said.

It's estimated the project length will be about three miles long, he added.

Another Caltrans project on Highway 17, roughly between the Summit and the Bear Creek overpass, will also start at the end of this month or in early June, Walik added.

The major scope of work consists of constructing various drainage systems and resurfacing the existing pavement. The concrete barriers and metal beam guard rail will be reconstructed or replaced as appropriate, he added.

The project is expected to cost $18 million and is scheduled to be completed by August 2012.

Both projects will be worked on in the evenings, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., to avoid commuters, Walik explained.

Walik said he's working with Kevin Rohani, assistant director of the Los Gatos Parks and Public Works Department, to inform town residents and the neighboring communities of Saratoga and Monte Sereno.
