In May, 1954, the Town Council voted to purchase the American Legion building on the north side of East Main Street to house the library.
Built as a war memorial in 1949, private donations of $16,000 had been made at that time with the promise that the building would remain a war memorial.
It was therefore agreed to call the building the ""
The Carnegie Library closed its doors permanently on August 15, 1954.
The new library opened its doors on Monday morning, September 1, 1954, without ceremony.
