Woman Struck by Car on Hwy 17

Accident is said to have occurred Tuesday, April 24 at 3 a.m. at the Summit.

A dispatcher with the California Highway Patrol confirmed Thursday that a woman was hit by a car early Tuesday morning while attempting to cross Highway 17 at Summit Road.

The CHP spokewoman, who declined to be identified, said the incident was reported at around 2:30 a.m.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old Diane Berania, of San Jose.

According to CHP reports, the crash closed both southbound lanes of the highway.

Berania was struck by a Ford F150, the CHP reported.

Central Coast News said the CHP received calls of a woman running on the highway screaming before the accident occurred.

Maria Camara, 69, the driver of the Ford, was within the southbound lanes when her truck struck Berania.

Berania sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Camara was not injured.

The CHP is still investigating why she was walking across the highway.
