Update: Tree Worker Killed in Los Gatos

Fatal accident is said to have occurred at private residence on Quarry Road off of High Street.

A tree worker was killed in Los Gatos Monday afternoon when a trunk fell on him while on a private job on Quarry Road and High Street.

According to Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Sgt. spokesman Kerry Harris, two workers were cutting down a tree for a private homeowner on Quarry Road when "some mishap occurred," and the tree fell on one of the workers killing him.

Update: 4:20 p.m., Monday, June 4: The accident is said to have occurred at 12:57 p.m. Dispatch received a call regarding a tree that had fallen on the worker and by 1:15 p.m. it was determined that one of the workers had been injured and the other had died during the accident, Harris said.

The other worker, identified as a 23-year-old San Jose resident, received moderate injuries and was transported to Valley Medical Center, Harris said.

As of 4:30 p.m., authorities were still attempting to recover the victim's body with help from the Los Gatos Parks and Public Works personnel. "They were working on a steep hillside on Quarry Road," Harris said.

"It's not known at this time whether they even had a permit to cut down the tree," Harris noted.

A total four Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police officers responded to the accident as well as Santa Clara County Fire units.

The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office is on scene as well as a representative from the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Harris added.

Very sad. Jim and I heard it up on Cypress Way and when going down saw 2 LGMS Police cars going up Loma Alta and Johnson. I was worried that there was something terrible if it required both paramedics and police. My condolences to the family and friends of the worker who died, and a speedy recovery to the injured one...

I wonder if these tree men are license contractors or the homeowner just found them outside of Home Depot. Cutting down a tree requires special skills, not anyone can do type of job! Sad for the workers!
